Wang Blog Post #4

1.        The viral ad I chose was “Share Some Soul”.  Its link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49I_mr4LzLw.

2.       The video ad has images of the new Kia Soul.  Its interior images illustrated its advanced technology.  The only text in the ad is at the end of the video.  The words Kia and their slogan “a new way to roll” appear as the car drives away from the war zone.

3.       The ad gains the attention of the audience by playing a common song “Party Rock Anthem.”  Also, the hip hamsters appeal to society’s youth, who focus on being cool.

4.       The ad’s pathos appeal is seen through the dramatic comparison between the destructive war zone and the sleek Soul.  This is used to appeal to the emotion of the targeted audience.  Likewise, the ad’s ethos appeal is seen through the interior images of the car.  The GPS and push-to-start ignition prove that the car is state of the art.  The ad’s logos appeals can be seen towards the end when the text reads “$14K.”  This proves to the audience that the car is a good deal and is logical to purchase.

5.       The audience for this ad is society’s youth who are in search of a car.  This can be determined when analyzing the fact that the car makes the hamsters look hip and cool.  Young adults continue to focus on looking “cool” so they would naturally appeal to the ad.

6.       The ad assumes that the audience is familiar with common technology such as GPS and push-to-start ignitions.

7.       The specific images of the car’s interior have a dramatic appeal to the targeted audience.  As technology continues to evolve, society’s youth are always in search of the “next best thing.”  If the car has these state of the art innovations then the audience would want to purchase the product.

The medium of this ad is YouTube.  As YouTube is an extremely popular Internet site, global attention is gained from utilizing the site.  It is the most effective medium and rivals other mediums such as Facebook and Google.

So I am and always have been interested in music.  I have played piano my whole life and it is a huge part of who I am.  Naturally I Google searched “music”.  Interestingly enough, my first website reply was Pandora.  Pandora is a music library in which you choose a song or artist and a playlist is formed based off the style of that particular search.  I use this website on a daily basis so I was pleased with the search.  However, my second website listed was Yahoo music, which actually has little to no information at all regarding music.  It is just a search engine that revolves mainly around musical entertainment.  The third search was something I had never come across before.  It was music.com, a website designed solely for music video searches.  When I had a buddy look up music on Google we had a few similar searches but not all.  His first and third websites were the same, but his second website was the ITunes homepage.  I asked him about his regular use of the computer and he confirmed that he used ITunes way more than I did.  This made sense as Google has made their searches more individualized since 2009.  Google’s changes can be good or bad depending on your specific use of the search engine.  If one is just looking around for personal interest than I believe the new search technique is extremely useful.  However, if research is being done from a non-bias standpoint, the personalization can get in the way of widespread information.

An appropriate 21st century utilizes modern technological advances but allows for free thinking and individualism.  Schools throughout the nation should teach proper use of innovations and ideas.  Intern, students will master these digital techniques and use them to make studying, learning, and organizing more efficient.  I do agree partly with Nicholas Carr’s theory that Google could be a disadvantage to the learning environment in that our access to unlimited knowledge can limit knowledge itself.  However, that is a problem I would strive to solve by regulating Internet usage for the students in the school system.  Wide spread research is appropriate, but simply plugging in a problem to get an answer is certainly defeating the purpose of learning.  It seems the biggest problem is that half of the population—the older half mind you—have not been studying the evolution of technology and therefore find it to be useless.  Similar to Virginia Heffernan’s argument, “we must stop disparaging digital prowess” simply because the older population cannot process it”.  As a society, we cannot ignore the fact that digital literacy will continue to exist in the future.  So what use is it to shelter young students from these advantages if they are bound to utilize them in the near future?  We are in a world of digital natives now and collaboration, as well as organization through the use of digital innovation is crucial in their development into successful citizens.

Upon entering the Virginia Tech homepage, multiple images of activities, students, and buildings around campus appear in the center.  These images help boost the positive outlook on Tech and the campus in general.  In the top left hand corner, the Virginia Tech emblem is shown and states the year (1872) in which the college was founded.  This gives some credibility to the school as it is one of the oldest in the nation.  Also, the whole site is colored in maroon and orange which emphasizes the colors of the Hokie nation.  The navigational tools all over the homepage are extremely easy to use and are bolded for easy recognition.  This is not only efficient for onlookers to navigate, but it also proves to make a positive impression on the work ethic at Virginia Tech.  The audience for Virginia Tech’s homepage is anyone interested or seeking information on Tech and its possibilities.  Overall, the color coordination, efficiency, and visual intrigue of the homepage helps viewers understand the high expectancy of Tech and its students.
